THOUSAND OAKS FIRST BREWERY

TARANTULA HILL BREWING CO.
Located about sixty minutes north of Los Angeles is Thousand Oaks, CA the home of the new Tarantula Hill Brewing Company. This ambitious partnership is comprised of a group of locals, friends from high school in Thousand Oaks. Their dream from those early days was to open a brewery in the region and that day has finally come!

A PREMIER DESTINATION
THBC not only set out to build an award winning brewery, but also housed within it’s walls is a full service Italian kitchen, an in-house coffee roasting plant and a craft Ice-Creamery. The results of this make THBC the premier destination of choice for craft beer and food in all of Thousand Oaks.

DESIGNING THE LOOK
In their minds eye the partnership said they wanted “an industrial look”. We in the design world hear “Industial Look” all day long. It’s been a popular design style for ten years. So our goal was to develop a forward-looking version of the industrial look. To move the design style to it’s next evolutionary step. If you look at our design you can see those efforts paid off. Recycled woods are offset by sleek metal finishes. Distressed concrete is offset by contemporary inlaid tile-scapes. Sculptured corten steel is offset by etched glass and custom lighting elements. The final results definitely reach the next level of concept brewery design.

IN THROUGH THE KITCHEN DOOR
For a branding / restaurant / brewery design firm like BSR we’re usually invitedinto a project through the brand door. The client is in need of a strong brand and
a brewery or restaurant design that speaks the same language. THBC was a bit different. BSR was brought in because we not only could help create the brand but our long expertise in restaurant and brewery creation made us a perfect fit to develop all aspects of the new concept; beer, food, ice cream.

NEOPOLITANO-STYLE PIZZA AND BEER. YEAH!
Both the Italian kitchen and the ice cream manufacturing facility were designed Exhibition style. That is, all aspects of the prep and make are visible to the customer. This not only adds a great deal of interest and enhances the guest experience, it also requires greater care in designing the materials and finishes as these are all visible to the guest. The heart of the design is the pizza make station, located in the bar counter separating the kitchen from the public space. This allows for a real show as guests watch as their craft made pizza is kneaded, spun and topped, then placed into the massive wood fired pizza oven adjacent to the make line. Very exciting stuff!

THE TARANTULA HILL AND THE BRAND STORY
What is Tarantula Juice? The story goes, in the days of the old west every saloon made it’s own version of home-made alcohol. Some were made in a vat, some were made in a bathtub and some were made in a horse trough. The only thing common to them all was – they were awful to drink and sometimes, downright dangerous. It’s for this reason the concoction was universally nicknamed Tarantula Juice. Many locals say that this is how Tarantula Hill got its name.
